Cahoon, Clemente, Hebets named AAAS fellows

Three University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty have been selected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. NFHC Director- Dr. Andy Benson Interviewed on AgriTalk

Nebraska Food for Health Center Director Andy Benson, Ph.D., was recently interviewed on AgriTalk by the host, Chip Flory. During his time on the show, Dr. Benson talked about how the Center came to be and the microbiome and crop genetic research happening at the Nebraska Food for Health Center.

Faculty-led startup takes aim at improving gut health

Nebraska faculty have founded a university spin-off company, Synbiotic Health, to develop a combination of beneficial gut bacteria and the fuel that feeds them.

A synbiotic, the company’s namesake, refers to the mixture of beneficial bacteria and fiber-like fuel that may be more effective at delivering health benefits when paired together. Working with NUtech Ventures, the university’s technology commercialization affiliate, the startup company has licensed its first synbiotic strains and plans to begin human clinical trials next year.

Two new leaders in internal medicine to arrive Feb. 1

October 29th, 2019

Peter Mannon, M.D., and Roslyn (Roz) Mannon, M.D., will join the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine in leadership roles on Feb 1. Both currently hold positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Dr. Peter Mannon has been named chief of the division of gastroenterology/hepatology in the department. He also will direct the Paustian Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center.

Study suggests gut bacteria helped shape mammalian evolution

The call to evolve could be coming from inside the house mouse.

Recent research from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and University of California, Berkeley suggests that bacteria residing in the digestive tracts of mouse species have partly directed their evolution and divergence over the past few million years.

Stalk-worn sensor to measure crops’ water use

Lincoln, Neb. — Wearable technology will soon move from wrist to stalk, swapping measures of blood flow and respiration for sap flow and transpiration.

Their design won’t have anyone confusing growing season with fashion season, but the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s James Schnable and Iowa State University colleagues are developing a Fitbit-like sensor to be worn by corn and other thick-stemmed crops.

CAREER award helps Yin develop tools to find key enzymes

With entire genomes available for study, finding specific genes of interest is challenging. University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Yanbin Yin, a bioinformatics specialist, is creating advanced computational tools to quickly identify a class of enzymes found in all living organisms.

Yin’s tools are aiding research, including his own, into human gut health, biofuel production, crop diseases and our evolutionary past.
