24 Huskers receive Layman Awards to boost research

Faculty, students earn Graduate Studies awards

The Office of Graduate Studies annually recognizes faculty and students for exceptional effort in teaching, mentoring, and research. One faculty member and five graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences received awards.

The Graduate Student Excellence in Mentoring Award recognizes graduate students who have demonstrated excellence in mentoring undergraduate and other graduate students in research and creative activities.

Microbiologists’ work adds to research on microbiome fungi and childhood disease

A surge in research projects on the human microbiome — the complex ecosystem of microorganisms in the human gastrointestinal tract — is bolstering scientific understanding of health, disease and environment. Much of the research has focused on gut bacteria and viruses, leaving a third factor — fungi — little studied.

Team makes first large-scale estimate of Americans’ consumption of live microbes

Nutrition studies are increasingly exploring the health benefits from friendly microbes found in food. A new study coauthored by a University of Nebraska–Lincoln food scientist provides the first large-scale estimate of Americans’ consumption of those microbes.
